  69. This package contains Grammar Slammer (Version 1.1), by James Bair.
  70. This document contains only a brief description of the package and its
  71. features, along with instructions for its installation. More detailed
  72. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form, and
  73. is more easily read after installation.

  75. If you have ever wanted grammar information at your fingertips, if you
  76. wanted to answer those questions that grammar checkers ask you, if you
  77. just are not sure where the comma goes...then Grammar Slammer is for
  78. you. It goes beyond a checker and is far easier than an online grammar
  79. book. It will slam your grammar agony!

  81. Also, if you wanted a computer-based tutor to review English grammar or
  82. to present it to a class on computer, Grammar Slammer may be just what
  83. you need.

  85. Grammar Slammer is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  86. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  87. use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see GRAMSLAM.TXT for more
  88. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  89. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program (see
  90. GRAMSLAM.TXT for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to others

  120. ===== Installation =====================================
  121.  
  122. To get started, you must install the file VBRUN300.DLL in the
  123. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you use a number of Windows programs, it is
  124. probably already there. If not, this file is available from most
  125. online services, bulletin boards, and software dealers, usually at no
  126. additional charge.
  127.  
  128. Then simply run SETUP.EXE, and GRAMMAR SLAMMER will set itself up in any
  129. Windows version 3.0, 3.1, NT, or 95. You can run SETUP.EXE by choosing
  130. the "File|Run" Menu option in the Program Manager and entering SETUP.EXE.
  131. (In Windows 95 the "Start|Run" option on the taskbar does the same
  132. thing). You may also run SETUP.EXE by double-clicking on the SETUP.EXE
  133. name from File Manager (or Windows Explorer in Windows 95).
  134.  
  135. SETUP problems (rare, but do happen):
  136. 1) SETUP does nothing. Make sure file VBRUN300.DLL is present in your
  137. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Otherwise this usually happens on older
  138. machines (such as 386/25's) or machines which are configured for a
  139. language other than English. If this happens, you may manually copy and
  140. rename the files to the selected directory. We recommend making a
  141. directory (folder) named C:\GRAMSLAM and then copying the necessary
  142. files into it. The files needed are GRAMSLAM.EX_ which should be renamed
  143. GRAMSLAM.EXE; GRAMSLAM.TX_ to be renamed GRAMSLAM.TX_; GRAMSLAM.HL_ to
  144. be renamed GRAMSLAM.HLP; GS1.IN_ to be renamed GS1.INI; GSB.IC_ to be
  145. renamed GSB.ICO; GSLAUNCH.HL_ to be renamed GSLAUNCH.HLP; and TBAR.VB_ to
  146. be renamed TBAR.VBX.
  147.  
  148. 2) After setting up and trying to run Grammar Slammer, you get a "Path
  149. not found" message. This may happen if the WINDOWS directory is on a
  150. different drive than the Grammar Slammer files. Try moving the Grammar
  151. Slammer directory and files to the same drive as WINDOWS directory. If
  152. there is still a problem, check to make sure all files are present. On a
  153. few older PC's there may still be a "path not found" message.
  154. Check to insure that the file WINHELP.EXE is in your \WINDOWS directory.
  155.  
  156. For some reason the TBAR.VBX does not work on a few machines. In that
  157. case, you may still use Grammar Slammer, but you cannot use the toolbar.
  158. In that case add Grammar Slammer to your Startup Window. (IF the startup
  159. window is missing, consult your Windows manual for how to create it.)
  160. Edit the "File|Properties" so that the command line reads "winhelp.exe
  161. c:\gramslam\gramslam.hlp" and choose the GSB.ICO for the icon. (Clearly
  162. if Grammar Slammer is in a different directory than c:\gramslam, you will
  163. have to make the necessary changes.) Then check the "run minimized" box.
  164. This will cause Grammar Slammer to be loaded as an icon which you can
  165. click or double-click to call up.
  166.  
  167. 3) If that still does not work, try going into the File Manager or
  168. Windows Explorer, and double-click on the GRAMSLAM.HLP file. If this does
  169. not successfully call up the Grammar Slammer help file, then either your
  170. WINHELP.EXE program is not working or in the wrong directory (it should
  171. be in your \WINDOWS directory), or your machine for some reason is not
  172. compatible.

  179. ===== Running GRAMMAR SLAMMER========================================
  180.  
  181. To run the program, double click on the new GRAMMAR SLAMMER icon you just
  182. installed. (Single click in Windows 95). All you see is a little toolbar
  183. with three buttons or icons.  This toolbar stays on top of any word
  184. processor or program which is running in Windows. Click on the left
  185. button with the "G" and GRAMMAR SLAMMER will appear. When you are done
  186. using GRAMMAR SLAMMER, click on the "Close" button, and you will return
  187. to your program, with the Grammmar Slammer toolbar ready for you to use
  188. again when you need to.

  190. Click on the middle button with the universal "Stop Circle" and the
  191. program will close. Click on the right button with the Question Mark and
  192. a Windows menu will appear giving you some choices to position the
  193. toolbar where you want it, ask for help, turn the pop-up help boxes off
  194. and on, and get additional information.
